With more and more of us switching from a regular cell phone to a new smartphone, whether it be a BlackBerry, Droid, Pre or iPhone. We have noticed the slight decline in our devices battery life. Here are some brief tips to try and make it last thru the day.
Reconsider Your Network
CDMA networks use more power than their GSM counter-parts. So if it’s fesible in your area maybe a switch to a different provider is in order
Dim It
The brighter the screen the more juice it’s pulling from you battery. Most devices have an auto-dim feature built in so make sure this is on and tweak it to your common surroundings
Stop Searching
It’s great to have a Bluetooth headset or use a WiFi hotspot, but if you’re not using your headset or near a hotspot make sure these options are shut off because they also put a drain on the battery.
Check Your Signal
If your in a low signal area turn off the automatic connection feature to your device. THe device is working twice as hard and using twice as much power searching for a stronger signal. If you are getting spotty 3G service switch to the slower EVDO or EDGE network.
Check Mail Manually
Change the interval of when your device connects to the mail server. If possible turn the “push” notifications off or manually setup your device to check it only once ever hour.
Turn Off Everything
No don’t turn the device completely off, because start up can drain the battery considerably more than putting the device into “airplane mode.” You won’t receive calls or emails but you can stretch battery life. Sometimes turning your device into a media player isn’t a good idea either depends on how low the state of your battery is.
“There’s an App for That”
Every device has an application free or paid that can monitor your battery for you and notify you of it’s state. These can be setup to notify you at certain percentages of battery life remaining so you can plan accordingly
Upgrade the OS
Sometimes there is an official update to your device that can improve battery life.
Plan Accordingly
If you can hold off on doing certain battery draining applications till when you get home or into the office where you can use either a personal computer or at least be near a charging source
Second Battery
Even if after trying your hardest and after all the planning. You still can’t get your device to stay charged, maybe a second battery could be in your future. Of course you’d have to make sure it was fully charged.
