Review: Tom Bihn Super Ego Bag with Brain Cell

Posted on Oct 31 2011 - 9:56pm by Bryan

Tom Bihn’s business is making very high quality laptop bags. Recently, we received the Super Ego bag to review. The Super Ego is a messenger style bag that will carry a laptop of pretty much any size, along with pretty much anything else. Simply put, it’s a big bag. What I really like is that you are able to customize the color and strap style so you can be yourself with your Tom Bihn bag. More information after the break.

So you may be wondering, who is this Tom Bihn guy? Tom Bihn is the name of the guy that runs this company out of Seattle, Washington. They make their products right there. All of the Tom Bihn products are made using very high quality materials and their market is people who hate the standard “black” bags and really want to customize it any way they want.

So for the Super Ego backpack, here are some specifications.

-          Volume: 27 liters

-          Weight: Super Ego / plastic buckle: 2lb, 10.65 oz., Super Ego w/seatbelt buckle 3lb, 3.1 oz.

-          Dimensions: 17” x 14.5” x 6.75”

-          Adjustable shoulder strap

-          #8 and #10 YKK Uretek “splash-proof” zippers on front pockets

-          Choice of plastic or metal buckle, choice of colors for the main bag.

It is constructed of a very strong nylon material. Nice thing I like about Tom Bihn is that you can return the bag and they will fix it. Now is it waterproof? Yes. Water repellant was applied on the outside and inside a Cordura lining was added that prevents any water from seeping in. The splash proof zippers were a really nice extra addition. I really liked the customization that Tom Bihn offers, that is totally awesome.

In terms of usability, it works very well.  It’s huge. Even when fitting in the largest of laptops, you STILL have room for more. Now, here is a problem I have with big bags and many of you can probably relate to this. When carrying a lot of stuff, the shoulder strap will eat into your shoulder. Not with the Tom Bihn bags. The Super Ego shoulder strap offers a 2” nylon strap that has a 2.5” wide foam protection where your shoulder meets the strap. It’s so comfortable.

There are so many compartments and areas to put things in the Tom Bihn Super Ego bag; it’s for someone who seriously has a “Super Ego” or looking to have one. When you lift up the front flap of the bag, there are two areas for things such as your keys, calculator, passport, flight tickets, wallet, etc.  Behind the pocket is a sort of bin that can fit a ton of stuff. Even a divider for things like pens, your MP3 player, or any other small gadgets like a digital camera.

The main compartment of the bag is of course, where you put your laptop. It’s HUGE and it’s really accessible. There isn’t, however much padding in this area. Because of this, Tom Bihn has also created an accessory called the “Brain Cell.” It’s a laptop sleeve/protector that will fit perfectly and snug inside this area. A description of the Brain Cell is below:

The Super Ego will accept all six sizes of the Brain Cell and, therefore, 99% of existing laptops. Inside the Brain Cell, your laptop is cradled in 8mm thick soft foam padding, and hangs suspended in a 4mm hard corrugated plastic insert that protects from the front, back, and bottom. The sides are protected by dense cross-linked closed-cell polyethylene foam. This offers the toughest protection you can get for your laptop in a case that is still light and minimalist.

Overall we LOVE this bag. Seriously LOVE it. The Super Ego bag as of writing starts at $170.00. Yes, it’s not your $60 bag, but with the Tom Bihn Super Ego, you really get what you pay for. The Brain Cell is currently an additional $60.

Overall, we had not one single complaint with this bag, we love it. We highly suggest this bag to anyone looking for a really awesome and customizable bag.  If we could give it a 10/5 review we would, but of course, the Tom Bihn Super Ego bag receives a 5/5 review. Well done!
