Head to Head Battle Of The Game Engines – Lets Do This

Posted by

The Xbox 360 and PS3 are quickly becoming a bit dated when it comes to the graphics they can pump out.  Just look at Battlefield 3 or Skyrim on the PC and you know what we mean.   That does not mean that dev’s are not making beautiful looking games.  Oh no, they are amazing.  Take a look at Gears of War 1 and immediately look at Gears 3 and you will see a HUGE difference.  The same can not be said from Modern Warfare 1 and 3, but that’s mainly because some dev’s are still using dated engines.  This article though is about the latest and greatest engines and what we can look forward to on next gen consoles!  Grab a coffee, sit back, and take a look at some amazing video of what the next generation of games could very well look like.

Unreal Engine 3 & 4

The Samaritan tech demo from Epic Games showcases the power behind the latest enhancements to the Unreal Engine 3, featuring high-end texture rendering, NVIDIA APEX physics technology, tesselation and displacement, and shader model 5 support. The engine provides unique and well-established tools for creating games for next generation consoles as well as across other platforms. The tech demo is considered just a preview of Epic Games latest technology achievements, however the assets designed for the demo seem worthy of an actual game.

Other new engine features:
- Image-based reflections
- Subsurface scattering (SSS)
- Anti-aliased masked materials
- Deferred rendering with MSAA support
- Bokeh depth of field
- High-quality dynamic shadows

When do you think games like this will be out?

Games that look like those demo’s will not be out anytime soon.  Those are pre-rendered, so they are more like “video” then in game footage.  Hopefully the next gen of consoles will produce stuff thats very close to it though.
