Is The Ryzen 7 3700X Good For Gaming?

AMD’s Ryzen 7 3700X is AMD’s upper mid-range CPU offering for the consumer desktop market. Offering 8 cores and 16 threads, while only drawing 80w of CPU power on average, it is a powerful and efficient processor.

While the Ryzen 5 3600 is still the budget king for gaming, those who want a step up in performance may be considering the Ryzen 3700X for better performance in gaming and elsewhere. Is the Ryzen 7 3700X good for gaming? The short answer is: Yes. The R7 3700X performs great in games while offering more multi-core performance for other tasks.

AMD’s Ryzen 7 3700X processor

Below, we will be going further into the details on the Ryzen 3700X to help you decide whether or not it is the right CPU for you, and what performance you can expect from AMD’s 8-core offering.

Is The Ryzen 7 3700X Overkill for Gaming?

Perhaps you’ve been told that a Ryzen 5 is “enough” for gaming and that anything more is a waste. But with modern games and game engines moving towards the trend of utilizing more cores, is the Ryzen 7 overkill?

That all depends on your usage, and what GPU you will be pairing it with. The Ryzen 7 3700X would make a good match for any high-end GPU, but it would be an overkill choice if you only have a GTX 1660 or below.

We recommend spending more on your GPU than on your CPU when it comes to gaming, as you will have better results that way. Your CPU should be balanced with the GPU you choose.

That being said, there are some games that benefit from having more cores and threads. Cyberpunk 2077, Assassin’s Creed: Origins, and Death Stranding are solid examples.

Streaming games is also another usage that can benefit from more cores, which leads us to

Is a Ryzen 7 3700X Good For Streaming Games?

Streaming your gameplay has become wildly popular over the past 5 years. Platforms like Twitch, Youtube, and Facebook Gaming all offering a place to share your streams. Streaming games adds further load to your CPU and/or GPU, and can result in lower performance, low stream quality, or stuttery gameplay if your hardware is not up to the task.

The Ryzen 7 3700X is an excellent choice for streaming. Having 8 cores and 16 threads generally allows extra CPU headroom to be allocated to encoding your game to stream it, as most games won’t utilize all 16 threads completely.

Having the extra threads available helps offset the performance loss you may have if you were using a less powerful CPU, and will give you the freedom to stream your games at a higher bitrate without affecting the quality of your gaming experience. We’d generally recommend at least 16GB of RAM as well if you are thinking about streaming.

Can a Ryzen 7 3700X Run 4K?

Running games at 4K UHD is a beautiful experience and offers great detail. But it is also extremely graphically demanding. 4K gaming tends to stress the graphics card more than the CPU, so the Ryzen 7 3700X is fully capable of running games at 4K, and will be for the foreseeable future.

The ability to run 4K gaming is almost entirely up to the graphics card you choose. Higher resolutions move from being CPU-bound at 1080p at, to being almost entirely GPU-bound at 4K, meaning the limit to your performance is almost always going to be how fast your graphics card is.

For the best 4K experience, we’d recommend an AMD RX 6800 XT or better, or an Nvidia RTX 3080 or better.

Is The Ryzen 7 3700x Future Proof for Gaming?

When buying a new CPU, you always want to make sure what you get will last you for a while. Not everyone has the money to spend on upgrades everytime something new comes out.

Games nowadays are starting to utilize more cores compared to titles of yesteryear. The Ryzen 7 3700X has an advantage there with its 8 strong cores. Looking at trends in the PC hardware market and gaming industry, the Ryzen 7 3700X looks to be a good option for those who want a future-proof CPU.

How long will the Ryzen 3700x last? Given that at the time of writing, it still offers great gaming performance; we’d wager it will last you 3+ years of use before you might want to think about upgrading, possibly longer.

Is The R7 3700X Worth It for Gamers?

The R7 3700X is a solid CPU with excellent overall performance, but is it worth it for you?

From a strictly gaming perspective, the Ryzen 5 3600 offers a better value proposition, as it is significantly cheaper for similar gaming performance. 9/10 times, the Ryzen 5 3600 will be equal or only a few percent behind the performance of the R7 3700X in the majority of currently released titles.

However, where the R7 3700X shines is where the R5 3600 lacks, in multi-threaded performance and streaming. Having extra cores will provide an overall smoother experience when streaming games and/or recording those games.

For those who do more than just game, the R7 3700X is also attractive for it’s multi-threaded performance when editing videos, rendering projects, encoding media, and/or CAD work.

The 3700X also offers a more solid foundation for those looking to buy high-end GPUs, and more balanced overall performance compared to lower core-count CPUs. This performance margin also means a bit more futureproofing for games to come in the future.

So back to the question at hand; Is the R7 3700X worth it? For those needing good multi-threaded performance on top of gaming performance, those looking to future-proof their PC for years to come,  or those who want to get into streaming their games live, the R7 3700X is certainly worth it over its cheaper siblings.

That being said, the R5 3600 is still a strong contender for those who are just gaming, and want the best bang for buck.
